Bulgaria's Assisted Reproduction Fund (ARF) ran out of its 2010 budget in August, after it underperformed and spent only half of its annual budget in 2009. Anna-Maria Borisova, the Minister of Health, has made a commitment to find additional funds to keep ARF functioning in the coming months.
Since April 2009, 8,480 applications for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment have been submitted, of which 5,900 have been approved. The IVF treatment resulted in 1,107 pregnancies representing a success rate of 32.11%, with 26% being the international threshold of success for clinically induced pregnancies. Until August 2010, 235 babies have been born as a result of the treatment funded by ARF. The Fund currently gives priority to reviewing the applications of 42 year-old women, as Bulgarian legislation only allows IVF treatment until the age of 43.
