The profit generated by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis in the Czech Republic dropped last year by 23.5%, reaching CZK 16.6m (€0.67m), according to Medical Tribune. In contrast, its revenues in the Czech Republic were up by 3.8% y-o-y, totalling CZK 3.6bn (€145.2m).
The majority of the sales were generated by the Pharma Division. Sales of OTC drugs accounted for less than a fifth.
Novartis has forecast similar revenues for 2010, in particular because of the influx of new generic drugs onto the market and lower drug reimbursement levels. The company hopes to offset these negative factors with new drug launches.
Novartis conducts its activities in 140 countries, with around 97,000 staff worldwide. In 2009 Novartis employed 239 staff in the Czech Republic.
