14% increase in direct healthcare payments by Slovaks in 2009

Last year Slovaks paid €1.145bn from their own pockets for medical products and services which were not covered by public health insurance (e.g., drug co-payments and hospital premium services), according to the government report Public Health Insurance 2009. On a year-on-year basis there was a 14% increase, from €1.003bn.
In 2009 the total resources available in the
Slovak healthcare industry reached €4.8bn, an 8.5% increase in comparison with 2008. €3.66bn came from public sources, €3.34bn of which from public health insurance.
Healthcare expenditure accounted for 7.3% of Slovak GDP, in contrast to 6.8% in 2008.
