UZIS: CZK 71bn spent on drugs and medical devices in Czech Republic in 2009
2010-06-16
The Czech Institute of Health Information and Statistics (UZIS) published data concerning last year’s outputs of pharmaceutical facilities, i.e., pharmacies and hand-out facilities of medical devices.
In 2009 all pharmaceutical facilities in the Czech Republic generated total sales of nearly CZK 71.7bn (€2.8bn), a year-on-year increase of 8.6%. This included CZK 63.6bn, from the sales of drugs, an increase by 8.4% y-o-y.
The number of received prescriptions has gone up by almost 6%, to 72.9 million. However, this figure is still around 18-22% lower than during 2002-2007; this can be explained by the introduction of regulatory fees in 2008.
In 2009 the Czech pharmaceutical sector employed, in full-time equivalents, 5,646 pharmacists and another 4,707 qualified medical personnel, mostly pharmaceutical assistants. In total this equalled to 12,450 persons and another 157 self-employed workers.
Data was collected from 2,443 statistical units, i.e., 94% of all registered pharmaceutical facilities.
