Health insurance contribution to rise to 10% in Bulgaria?

From 2011 the obligatory healthcare contributions will be increased from 8% to 10% of salaries, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has announced. The reason for the increasing of the healthcare contributions rate is most of all the ongoing shortage in financing of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). According to Jeny Nacheva, the new NHIF director, the healthcare contribution rate in Bulgaria is lower than in most European Union countries and the NHIF estimates that at the end of 2009 it collected BGN 250m (€127.8m) less in contributions than expected. Mr. Borisov claimed the increase will prevent future delays in payments to doctors and dentists in Bulgaria, as has been the case since November 2009.
