Seven new innovative drugs on reimbursement list in Hungary
2010-03-08
Seven new innovative drugs were included in a February amendment to the drug reimbursement list in Hungary. This is considered a significant improvement, because in 2009 no innovative drugs were included in the reimbursement scheme due to budget restrictions. There are also twenty new products placed on a waiting list for admission.
Meanwhile, in December 2009 the Hungarian Health Ministry modified the regulations pertaining to the rules of access to conditionally reimbursed drugs. The new amendment stipulates that up to 50 patients per year can be granted the conditional reimbursement of one therapy. The Hungarian Association of Innovative Pharmaceutical Manufacturers has criticised the modification, which could, in their opinion, limit the equal access of patients to effective treatment. According to Magyar Nemzet, the Hungarian Cancer Society has challenged the amendment before the Constitutional Court. The Ministry has refused to withdraw it, claiming that it serves the interests of patients and prompts drug manufacturers to adjust their prices in order to receive reimbursement, as this is the only way to provide continuous and safe access to medicinal products.
