Czech Ministry cuts swine flu vaccine order by 30%
2010-02-23
The Czech Republic has decided to cancel an order for 300,000 doses of swine flu vaccine, thus limiting the number of injections to 700,000, according to a report in E15 magazine. This is the maximum amount the country could cancel without paying any financial penalties to GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer. According to the Czech Health Ministry, the reduction of the order will save the country CZK 55m (€2.14m).
The contract was initially worth CZK 220m (€8.55m), and the vaccines were to have been made available to 500,000 Czech citizens in high-risk groups and professions crucial to the smooth running of the state. As interest in the swine flu inoculation campaign has been relatively muted, the Ministry is now planning to make the vaccines available to all citizens over three years of age. The country plans to leave 120,000 vaccines as a reserve in case they are needed in the future.
