Romanian government bans sale of 36 hazardous plants and substances

The Romanian Health Ministry has banned the sale of 27 substances and nine plants with psychoactive properties. The Ministry found these substances hazardous to human health after recording 1,300 incidents caused by these plants and substances in 2009 which led to medical intervention. The Ministry claims that the effect of consuming such plants is similar to that experienced after taking narcotic or psychotropic preparations.
In August 2009 there were approximately 120 stores selling such products in Romania, but Health Ministry estimates suggest that this number had tripled by the beginning of this year. The shops must dispose of their stock within 10 days.
