95% of Gedeon Richter’s distribution sales take place in Romania
2010-02-22
In 2009 the pharmaceutical sales of
Gedeon Richter, the prominent Hungarian drug manufacturer, increased by 12% year on year to €26.1m in Romania. However, the vast majority of the group’s total sales in the country, worth €159.9m, were generated by its drug distribution and retail division, which recorded sales worth €147.5m. The company’s Romanian wholesale and retail unit sales were relatively flat (a 0.9% year-on-year increase) but they made up 95% of Gedeon Richter’s total sales in this area in 2009.
At present, Richter’s distribution arm in Romania consists of 142 pharmacies operating under the
Gedeon Richter Farmacia brand name and the wholesale subsidiaries
Dita Import Export and
Pharmafarm, making Richter one of the largest drug distributors and retailers in Romania and significantly contributing to the company’s sales. Richter’s distribution subdivision saw the most extensive development in 2006 and 2007, when the company acquired several Romanian drug distributors and retailers, including
Sibofarm, the Dita Group, Pharmafarm,
Pharma Plus, Armedica Trading, and this was followed by the rebranding of the respective pharmacies.
In 2010 Gedeon Richter expects its sales to grow by 0-5% and has no plans to open or close any of its pharmacies in the country.
