The value of wholesale sales of medicines to pharmacies fell by 7% y-o-y in January and amounted to PLN 1.95bn (€489m), according to latest data from IMS Health. This came after a long period of uninterrupted growth, and marked the first year-on-year drop in January sales in five years. In monthly terms the market rose by 20%, which is a normal occurrence at this time of the year (in previous years, increases of 30% in relation to December were common).
IMS attributed the weak result to a small number of flu and other respiratory infections and decreased patient activity, amid extreme freezing temperatures.
According to IMS, in 2009 wholesale medicine sales grew by nearly 11% to PLN 21.4bn (€5.4bn) – at net wholesale prices.
