Bulgaria continues to lag behind most EU countries in terms of access to the treatment of myocardial infarctions with primary angioplasty, according to data announced at the first Bulgarian meeting under the "Stent for Life" initiative organised by the European Cardiology Society. According to the society’s experts in 2008, 52% of Bulgarian patients with a myocardial infarction were not treated at all; 25% received the more obsolete thrombolytic treatment, and only 23% had a coronary angioplasty.
The "Stent for Life" initiative aims to increase this figure to 70% in six European countries, including Bulgaria.
