Status of paramedic staff in Bulgaria to be clarified by law

The Bulgarian Health Ministry intends to prepare a special ordinance to lay out the responsibilities and functions of all paramedic staff in the healthcare system, Bojidar Nanev, the Bulgarian health minister, has announced.
At present, paramedics must have an undergraduate degree in medical science, but various legislative omissions create confusion with regard to the functions they can or cannot carry out. It remains unclear whether the term “doctors’ assistants” will be adopted to identify paramedics working alongside doctors and nurses in hospitals, as suggested in the latest proposed changes to the Health Act.
