The combined 2009 sales of Romania's three best-selling analgesic agents, i.e. Algocalmin, Nurofen and Paracetamol, amounted to 383 million doses and generated €37m in revenues, according to Cegedim. In the opinion of professor Ion Fulga from Carol Davila Medical University quoted in
Gindul, this is a disturbing fact, considering that metamisol, the active substance in Algocalmin, is forbidden in several countries and uncontrolled use of this analgesic could damage health.
Research by GfK carried out in 2006 revealed that 75% of Romanians consumed drugs without prior consultation with the doctor in some cases like sudden headache or cold.
