The 2010 budgets of municipal hospitals in Bulgaria have been cut drastically, by as much as 60-70% in some cases. These cost-saving measures were announced by the Health Ministry shortly after many municipal hospitals in Bulgaria had to transfer ownership from the regional to the national level as part of the ongoing healthcare reform in Bulgaria. The news led to spontaneous protests in some Bulgarian towns, despite assurances by the Health Ministry that these budgets are provisional and will be updated every quarter throughout 2010.
