15% increase in Rx drug sales for Bayer Schering Romania in 2009

In 2009 sales of Bayer Schering Pharma Rx drugs in Romania grew by 15% despite the difficult conditions on the pharmaceutical market in the country, according to a preliminary assessment by Andreas Damaske, the company’s GM, quoted in The Capital. However, this year the company expects a much more modest increase in revenue.
Assuming that Bayer’s drugs sales in Romania were worth RON 176.2m (€41.5) in 2008, and with last year’s increase of 15%, its 2009 sales should reach RON 202.6m (€47.8m).
Bayer launched three new drugs on the Romanian market in 2009, covering the areas of cardiovascular disease, arterial hypertension and contraception. The best sales results were achieved by Betaferon, a multiple sclerosis agent which generated €6m revenues. This year several new pharmaceuticals are expected to be introduced to the market, and Bayer has no intention of reducing its marketing budget in 2010. It is planning to focus on the promotion of specific products instead of therapeutic areas.
In Romania Bayer develops three business lines: healthcare, agriculture and automotive. Between Q1 and Q3 2009 the company earned revenue of €76m, a level similar to the analogous period of the previous year, and expected the full-year result to match the 2008 level, of €91m.
