Czechs spent CZK 40bn on private healthcare services in 2008

In 2008 patients in the Czech Republic spent over CZK 40bn (€1.6bn) on medical treatment and medicines, in addition to healthcare insurance payments, according to the Institute of Health Information and Statistics quoted by the Czech News Agency. In 2004 this reached CZK 24.4bn (€1bn). This means that whereas in 2004 patients covered 12% of their total healthcare costs in cash payments, the figure was 16% in 2008.
In total some CZK 259bn (€10.2bn) was spent on healthcare services in the Czech Republic in 2008 (in comparison with CZK 209bn or €8.2bn in 2004). Healthcare spending accounted for 7% of GDP in 2008.
